Clay Demos
Another specific subject in Hubbard's "study tech" involves a practice referred to as a "clay demonstration," or just "clay demo" for short. Yet again, this is an old concept given sparkling new names and an excessively wide range of use.
I'm sure all of us at one point played with play-doh or modelling clay during our childhood. It's a fairly well established fact that the majority of children learn best visually and through tactile interaction. If they can look at something, feel it, move it with their own hands, they find it much easier to grasp than a figurative, theoretical concept. We all built things with blocks, made shapes with cookie cutters, and played around with clay.
That's all clay demos are. They're an attempt to have someone visualize figurative, theoretical concepts for the sake of better understanding. Everyone, regardless of age, goes through clay demo phases during Scientology training courses, where they're asked to mold and shape the clay to represent various concepts learned in the course. Oftentimes, for adults, it may not even be the literal physical incarnation of theoretical concepts that's so useful to the learning process, but the relaxing and thoughtful aspects of the creative process. The same mental stimulation takes place for certain people if they're painting, sewing, participating in crafts, creating music, or other similar creative endeavors. Sometimes just thinking about something whilst expressing yourself creatively can spark the analytical processes of the mind and open up new avenues of understanding. Yet another instance of an old, common sense idea given a new name and sold as something remarkably unique and new.
