Physical Illness: Part One
Many people are aware that Scientology is adamently opposed to psychiatry, but unfortunatly not many people understand that they are just as vehemently opposed to traditional doctors as well. They are opposed to any branch of medicine, any field, any doctor. Why? Well, I'll let you decide exactly why the leadership would oppose a science that has flat out proven that there's no scientific basis whatsoever for their claims regarding the benefits of Dianetics and Scientology.
But when it comes right down to it, the people don't believe in medicine, because they don't believe there's any such thing as a physical illness.
If you remember in the story of Xenu, it's very plainly stated in that part of the doctrine that the "thetans" - the souls of all the aliens Xenu killed in the volcanoes - are the cause of all of our depressions, anxieties, stresses, and problems.
That includes physical illness.
As these thetans attach to your body, either individually or in clusters, they become known as "body thetans." When they attach to you, they cause pain and discomfort, either mentally, emotionally, spiritually, or physically.
Tory Christman, a high-level OT7 Scientologist for 30-years, demonstrated Scientology's answer to how to get rid of these body thetans. In so doing, she also described precisely the method through which the body thetans inflict their damage. (You can see the video here)
In her video, Tory explains that the point of upper-OT-level "solo-auditing" is to concentrate and try to telepathically locate various body thetans that have attached to your body. You do this by figuring out where you might have an ache or a pain. As an example, Tory says in the video that she has a shoulder ache, so she needs to look for the "BT or Cluster" (Body Thetan or Cluster of body thetans) that's affecting her shoulder. It's not that she might have a muscle spasm, or that she might have strained something. No, it's a spirit of a dead alien killed by Xenu that's attached to your shoulder, pretending to be something specific that's attacking you. Again, for the sake of this example, Tory continues by saying that in this instance, the body thetan is pretending to be a knife, stabbing her in her shoulder.
At this point, supposedly, just by getting into telepathic contact with the alien and identifying what it's pretending to be, the spirit could take off and leave you alone. As they leave, the pain goes away - problem solved, no need for medicine, no need for a doctor.
Now sometimes it's not all that easy to get rid of them, and Tory goes into detail about what to do next, but I'll leave that for you to watch.
The point is, that is the extent of Scientology's medical "therapy" - that is how they go through auditing sessions to treat ailments of all kinds, both mental and physical. Slowly as you sink deeper and deeper into Scientology - or as Tory calls it, 'The Truman Show' - you're handed one small piece of information at a time. Each time you're handed that small piece to the puzzle, everything is in place to bolster your confidence and make everything seem wonderful and rosy. By the time you get all of the information that I just wrote out, you've invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and decades of your life. So it may seem crazy and totally unbelievable to us, but we're not invested in it the way the people are who are stuck in this 'Truman Show' world.
And that's precisely where the danger is. Getting sucked into this deeper and deeper, even if you had a very, very serious ailment, you're so wrapped up in it that you seriously think you can cure cancer, heal broken bones, and - as Tom Cruise said - be the only person at an accident that can really help, all through auditing.
It's got to be a great feeling to be absolutely convinced that you're a god with the power to heal all wounds because you have this spectacular super-human, other-worldly power to telepathically speak with the dead souls of space aliens that are attacking your friends, your family, and the rest of the world. Think what a boost that would be for you ego.
And think how defensive you'd be if a scientist came along and told you it was all a load of bunk.
It's not exactly the best analogy, but think of how upset a lot of religious people get when science comes up with yet another theory that supposedly discredits some part of the Bible, or Christianity, or the exact history of Islam, or what have you. It's unsettling for anyone to hear something as concretely accepted in society as science, and not a lot of people have positive reactions to such challenges to their faith.
Now imagine that you've invested all your life savings and all of your adult life because you were promised the ability to really, truly heal people and have all kinds of amazing abilities. Imagine that all of your life has been sunk into this promise, this idea of other-worldly abilities blossoming from your faith. You've disconnected from family members, you've disconnected from friends, perhaps even you've joined the Sea Org and have proven yourself to be among the elite in your faith.
Suddenly, that feeling any of us might get when our faith is challenged, that reaction is infinitely multiplied for a Scientologist. When you're in that 'Truman Show', the last thing you want to hear is something concrete like science telling you there's this "fact" that contradicts and potentially invalidates that spectacular sacrifice and investment. They aren't just being confronted with a challenge to their faith, they're facing a challenge to their entire life. Everything. Every single choice they ever made, and that one "fact" challenges it all, puts it all on the line.
How would you react? Probably about the same way the average Scientologist does when confronted with a psychiatrist or a doctor. Everything those professions stand for is in direct contradiction of everything every Scientologist has sacrificed their entire lives to obtain.
Sadly, that's not even the half of it. The truly unfortunate and frighteningly dangerous side to this is when physical illness can't be explained by a simple body thetan pretending to be a knife in your shoulder. This is where things get complicated, when no matter how hard Scientology tries, it just can't follow through on its promises to cure any and all ailments of the body and mind.
The following segment is very important to me, because it's the very reason I got involved in this fight. It's one of the single most important aspects of this entire issue and, in my mind, it's the reason behind so many of the deaths in Scientology. It affects the story of Lisa McPherson, Jeremy Perkins, and so many others.
So I hope you will indulge me as I break from the format and instead speak from the heart. You can read part two here.
