Learning How to Learn

A big part of the Scientology "doctrine" involves a specific type of training called "Study Tech." This is essentially a methodology for teaching you how to learn. It involves what Hubbard described as "the three barriers to study," which are misunderstood words (MUs), lack of mass, and too steep a gradient. Hubbard claimed that if you addressed these three barriers, there'd be no limit to what you could learn. While that's an admirable goal, this particular study tech is exactly revolutionary in its techniques. In my own opinion, it seems to me as if it's nothing but common sense repackaged with gleaming new lingo.

The first of the three barriers - Misunderstood Words - are addressed by "finding and clearing (i.e. fully understanding) misunderstood words as they are encountered." In other words, if in the process of reading a book you come upon a word you don't understand, pull out a dictionary and look it up. I'm sure when Noah Webster wrote his dictionary, he never dared to imagine his work would be use to... look up word definitions.
The second barried - "Lack of Mass" - is overcome by "obtaining the actual physical presence of the subject." To put it more simply, context. We all know that the context in which practically any statement is presented can do a lot to determine its meaning. If that context is lacking, it may be hard to interpret new ideas properly. So this "lack of mass" is an awfully flowery way of saying, make sure you put these ideas into proper context.
The third and final barrier - "too steep a gradient" - is really nothing more than a creative way of saying, make sure the student doesn't proceed through course materials too quickly, without fully understanding the previous concepts. Yet again, it's nothing more than pure common sense to not skip ahead or go through new subjects too quickly - after all, no one expects a child to leap straight from multiplication tables to complex trigonometry.

I think it's fairly obvious that these aren't exactly radically new or revolutionary learning concepts. The only thing new here are the austentatious new titles for looking words up in a dictionary, establishing proper context, and learning at your own pace. In fact, if you have any modicum (clear that word!) of common sense, I bet you've been using Hubbard's "study tech" all your life without realizing it, and without paying boatloads of money. Hubbard may have invented the names, but I really don't think he truly invented these learning concepts - they've been around far longer than he has.

Training courses have to do with "study tech" are spread throughout Scientology, basically applying these three basic concepts to a wide variety of subjects. If you had attended courses to learn what I just explained from the Church of Scientology, you would have spent anywhere from $100 to upwards of $100,000. It may seem unbelievable, but the same stories have been surfacing from former members time and again. Anything and everything Scientology can charge you for, they're going to take you for everything you've got. Every year the prices for Scientology training courses and services rise exponentially. It's be impossible to keep up with their outrageous rate of inflation.
