Overview

The story of Xenu is the information contained in the Operating Thetan Level Three training course of the Church of Scientology. It's the closest equivalent Scientology has to a "creation story," but in order to hear it you have to spend several hundred thousand dollars on years and years of training in order to reach the OTIII level. Even then, after you've spent all this money and time, you cannot discuss this story with anyone, not even your spouse. Think of it as if the Christian churches refused to teach you about the Atonement or Crucifixion until you'd been in the church for 10 years and you'd spent your life savings to pay for Sunday School. Then even after all that, the entire story of Christ is so secret, you can't share it with anyone, even if they're part of the same congregation.
Hubbard, who wrote this part of the doctrine in 1967, said that if anyone heard this story without being properly prepared, they could get pneumonia and die. Thus far, as far as I'm aware, no one's dropped dead after hearing about Xenu.
The reason the story of Xenu is so important is because it explains a great deal regarding how Scientologists think, how they view the world, and most importantly - in my opinion - how they view other religions. Several of Scientology's major celebrities have said repeatedly that Scientology is an applied religious philosophy, and that you can be a Catholic and a Scientologist, a Jew and a Scientologist, etc. The story of Xenu clearly says otherwise, and in fact, is not only insulting to other religions, it's downright damning.

The Story of Xenu

This "revelation" says that 75 million years ago, the Galactic Prince Xenu decided to address an over-population problem by using psychiatrists to round up billions of aliens and freezing them in a mixture of alcohol and glycol to "capture their souls". He then transported them on rocket-powered DC-8s to this planet (then known as Teegeeak), where he dropped the frozen alien bodies into 12 volcanoes or more. Xenu believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing well, so he made sure the aliens were good and dead by dropping countless H-bombs onto the volcanoes (and of course, these H-bombs were much, much stronger than anything we have today.)
At this point the aliens were definitely dead, but their souls survived. These souls - known as "thetans" - floated up toward the sky. Xenu, being the forward thinker that he was, prepared for this by building giant soul-catchers in the sky, which Hubbard described as long electronic ribbons which attracted the souls, which then became caught on the ribbons.
These ribbons delivered all these thetans to massive movie-theater-like facilities where the dead alien souls were brain-washed into believing all sorts of things - including dinosaurs, ancient history, mythology, as well as the precepts, principles, and stories inherent to all world religions (including the whole idea that Christ existed, that Hinduism believes in reincarnation, that whole idea about karma, etc). This essentially means that according to Scientology, the beliefs of all other faiths were invented by Prince Xenu for the purposes of confusing and distressing the souls of these dead aliens.
After being thoroughly brainwashed, these thetans were released, where they roamed the Earth until they came in contact with prehistoric man. The dead alien souls attached themselves to our bodies, either individually or in clusters, and they continue with us to this day, causing all of our pain, sadness, and confusion, including physical illness as well. In other words, there's no such thing as schizophrenia, cancer, leukemia, alzheimers, and yes, even down to the common cold. None of it exists, it's all just dead alien souls - or "body thetans" - confusing us.
After all of this happened 75 million years ago, military officers loyal to the people rose up and overthrew Xenu. They locked the evil galactic prince away in a mountain, where he was imprisoned forever by a force field powered by an "eternal battery". Teegeeack was then abandoned by the Galactic Confederacy and remains a "prison planet" to this day, although it has suffered various incursions by alien "Invader Forces" since that time.

Xenu in Scientology

Despite what Scientology would have us believe, the Xenu story is vital to many aspects of Scientology doctrine. The whole purpose of auditing and progressing up the "Bridge to Total Freedom" is specifically designed by Hubbard to supposedly teach you how to detach youself from these "body thetans," which are the source of all our grief which keeps us from spiritual enlightenment. The process of auditing involves going through past memories - specifically memories from former lives - so that we can identify these clusters of dead aliens and convince them to leave us alone.
Hubbard claimed that he was the first to map a precise route through this "Wall of Fire" that was preventing all of a mankind from achieving a state of spiritual grace. He first publicly announced this "breakthrough" in Ron's Journal 67 (RJ67), a tape Hubbard recorded on September 20, 1967. In keeping with the threat of pneumonia, Hubbard claims these revelations came at the cost for him personally, in the form of a broken back, knee, and arm. The OTIII training texts include a warning that this information - known as the "R6 implant" - is "calculated to kill (by pneumonia etc) anyone who attempts to solve it." In RJ67, Hubbard alludes to the devastating long-term effects of Xenu's genocide:
"And it is very true that a great catastrophe occurred on this planet and in the other 75 planets which formed this Confederacy 75 million years ago. It has since that time been a desert, and it has been the lot of just a handful to try to push its technology up to a level where someone might adventure forward, penetrate the catastrophe, and undo it. We're well on our way to making this occur."
Part of the OTIII traiing involves teaching Scientologists to locate body thetans and release them from the effects of this genocide 75 million years ago by auditing them. At this level, this is accomplished in solo auditing, where the Scientologist holds both cans of an E-meter in one hand and asks questions to themselves as an auditor. The Scientologist directs themselves to a cluster of body thetans, addresses it telepathically, and then guides each individual member of that cluster through the Xenu story step by step in order to free them from the devastating effects of those memories. Hubbard warns that this is a painstaking procedure, and that OT level IV and VII are necessary to continue the long process of deaing with one's body thetans.

The insinuations inherent in the Xenu story, as well as Hubbard's many statements in relation to it, have been a source of contention between Scientology and many other religions. Critics and some Christians state that Hubbard's statements regarding all of this material prove that Scientology doctrine is incompatible with Christianity, thus nullifying the church's claims that it's a religious philosophy that can be applied to any other faith, (i.e. their claims that you can be a Catholic and a Scientologist.) In "Assists", Hubbard says:
"Everyman is then shown to have been crucified so don't think that it's an accident that this crucifixion, they found out that this applied. Somebody somewhere on this planet, back around 600BC, found some pieces of R6 [the Scientology term for this entire story], and I don't know how they found it, either by watching madmen or something, but since that time they have used it and it became what is known as Christianity. The man on the Cross. There was no Christ. But the man on the cross is shown as Everyman."

Personally, I find it offensive - given the presence of these attitudes in the most sacred of Scientologist doctrines - that the Church of Scientology lies to the public continually regarding the applications of their "religious philosophy" to other faiths. It's exceedingly clear that Hubbard was vehemently opposed to every other faith and it's clearly part of Scientology's doctrine that all other faiths were simply made up by Xenu for the purposes of confusing us and making us all unhappy. I find it deceitful in the worst possible way. If they want to believe that, of course they have every right, but they have no right to lie about it so maliciously.

Keeping it Quiet

As explained above, Scientology has many varied reasons why they would want to keep the story of Xenu secret. They have so much to gain by keeping it silent, and so much to lose if it's widely understood. Knowledge of that story says so much about the organization and how it operates, how it controls people, and the many lies it tells to both convert and maintain members. If you knew the story of Xenu in all of its absurdity, would you ever accept even the most basic precepts? Most people say no. That means no new members for Scientology, no new money, and ever dwindling numbers of "parishioners". That's bad for business.
The reason this story is so widely accepted and believed despite Scientology's adament denials is the sheer number of instances where ex-members have all independently of each other left the church with the exact same story to tell. Several former members such as Arnie Lerma, Tory Christman, Stacy Brooks, and so many others, they all trained well past OTIII, and they all came out with documentation of the story through internal memos, their own private educational material provided by the church for their training, and their own memories of reading the story for the first time. Most even had access to a recording of a lecture Hubbard gave where he told the story himself. All of those materials have been made available online.
Considering how secluded upper level members are, considering the fact that it is a very serious high crime to discuss the Xenu story with anyone, it's remarkable that so many people came out of the church with the exact same story. Down to the most inane of details, they all had the exact same story. Many of these people did not know each other, did not have any contact, didn't even know these people existed. Yet they all had the same story to tell.
It baffles the mind why, when so much evidence is available direct from Scientology, that the organization would still to this day continue to deny the story's existence.
